Oolong teas, also known as "semi-green teas" or "semi-fermented teas", represent a unique category in the tea world. They are situated on the spectrum between green and black teas, and their diversity of flavors and aromas captivates tea connoisseurs around the world. Thanks to specific processing and the natural richness of antioxidants and other beneficial substances, Oolong teas not only have exceptional taste but also offer numerous health benefits.
What is Oolong Tea?
Oolong mainly comes from China and Taiwan, where its production has a long tradition dating back hundreds of years. The name "Oolong" is derived from the Chinese term "Wu Long", which means "black dragon". This poetic name reflects not only the elegance of tea leaves, which often twist into shapes resembling a dragon during processing, but also the unique character of this beverage.
Unlike green teas, which are processed without oxidation, and black teas, which undergo full oxidation, Oolongs are only partially oxidized. The production process includes hand-picking the leaves, withering, shaking, oxidizing, and subsequent baking. It is the degree of oxidation, which can range from 10% to 70%, and the processing method that gives rise to a wide range of flavors – from delicate floral notes resembling green teas to full, robust, and roasted flavors closer to black teas.
The Flavorful World of Oolongs
Oolong teas offer an immense variety of flavors. The most well-known types include:
-
Tie Guan Yin (Iron Goddess of Mercy)

Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe)

Dong Ding (Frozen Summit)
This Taiwanese Oolong comes from higher altitudes. It is characterized by a sweet, buttery taste with delicate notes of caramel and fruit. -
Milk Oolong
Popular for its creamy texture and aroma reminiscent of milk or caramel. This tea is a frequent choice for those who prefer gentler and sweeter notes.
