Moka pots

Moka pot serves as a moka coffee maker to prepare moka coffee on conventional hotplates as well as on modern induction machines. It is also known as a cotto or samovar. It produces coffee with a taste and intensity very close to espresso, but at a much lower price! What kind of moka (mocha) pot to choose? Aluminium moka kettles are slightly cheaper and have a longer tradition, you don't have to worry about aluminium nowadays. On the other hand, stainless steel moka kettles cost a bit more, but work on induction plates. Also consider the size of the kettle, a large one can hold slightly less water (but not less than half). For a great taste from a moka coffee machine, freshly ground coffee is necessary. Our coffee beans are roasted every week. We do not store them longer than this to prevent them from degrading in quality.

What is a moka pot?

A mocha pot is used to prepare a special kind of coffee, bearing the same name. The resulting drink is similar to espresso, but much weaker. Moka coffee is so simple that it has become popular with millions of people around the world.

A big plus of mocha coffee is the low cost of its preparation. Moka coffee pots are very cheap and easy to use compared to quality espresso machines.

How does a moka pot work?

A mocha kettle is a very simple device. It consists of three superimposed parts. You pour water into the bottom one, pour the ground coffee into the middle one, and the top one produces the final drink. For more about making mocha coffee, see our instructions.

What size moka pot should I choose?

Take into account the size of the pot. A large pot can hold slightly less water or coffee (but not less than half as much). If you are a bigger coffee lover, you can choose a slightly larger pot.

You can always make small strong cups from a moka pot. It can be said that the 1 cup mark equals about 50ml / 8g of coffee, i.e. a 4 cup pot can hold about 200ml for 24g of coffee. You can put slightly less water or coffee in a large kettle (but not less than half). If you are a bigger coffee lover, you can opt for a slightly bigger pot. Freshly ground coffee is required for a great taste from a mocha coffee maker.

Other moka pots

Moka pots can be most easily classified according to the type of heating. Since 1933, when the moka pot was invented, there have been several improvements to the original design.

Gas or electric stove moka kettle - the original form of moka kettle, and therefore the most widely used. These kettles must be made of heat-resistant materials such as steel or aluminum.
Induction moka kettles - these are basically stainless steel moka kettles for induction stovetops. Nowadays, induction hobs are becoming more and more common, so it goes without saying that there is a moka kettle for such cases. It is important that the diameter of your moka kettle corresponds with the hob, otherwise it may not work properly.
Electric moka kettle - there are also moka kettles with their own heating source. These are especially handy when traveling or in kitchens where there is a smaller stove.
