The burr holder (grinding stone holder) on Baratza Encore, Virtuoso and Preciso grinders is a plastic component inside the grinding chamber that holds the upper (round) grinding stone in the correct position relative to the lower stone.

The burr holder has several important functions:

  • It fixes the upper grinding stone so that it remains precisely centered.
  • Works with the coarseness setting, as it moves the entire top system
  • Ensures grinding stability to keep particle size even
  • Guides the coffee down to the outlet
  • What happens if it is damaged

When the plastic "paws" or handles break off:

  • Grinding is uneven (combination of fine and coarse particles)
  • the coarseness setting may change by itself
  • coffee may be excessively coarse or "muddly" (cloudy, unbalanced)
  • vibrations or scrubbing sometimes occur
